Moss is Coming Back to Life

Hi there.

When I went to a tea ceremony practice the other day, my teacher said, "It's too hot this year, so the cicadas don't sing during the daytime. They start singing when it gets cooler, so it's a quiet summer except in the mornings and evenings.” I thought that was true. In our garden, the cicadas that sing loudly in the mornings seem quieter during the day. There are special kimonos that are worn during the hot season, made of ro (gauze) or sha (silk gauze). They are called “semi no hane,” meaning cicada wings. The thin, transparent, cool fabric of the kimono was made to look like cicada wings. People used to think cicadas were so beautiful that they were said to be the reincarnation of beautiful women.

A Moss Garden that Has Been Growing Well Even in Summer

The other day, I visited one of my clients to clean up the garden outside a tearoom. While most customers are struggling with leaf burn or lack of water for their plants, this garden is doing very well this year, and the moss is still lush and beautiful.

The moss tends to die back at this time of year, and sometimes we have to replace it. This year, however, it’s been growing so beautifully, which is unbelievable. In addition to daily watering, the outdoor lights seem to have allowed the moss to get energy and grow well.

Thanks to the lights, I can see that ground moss is beginning to emerge from the pasted moss and is adapting to the environment. I am very happy to see that the moss is surviving the heat and recovering without replacing it.

We brought the garden back to life as a result of daily maintenance. We hope to help the garden keep surviving midsummer and keep it beautiful all year long.
