According to the traditional Japanese calendar, it’s “麦秋至”(mugi no toki itaru): the time for the wheat harvest. In Shiga, golden ears of wheat are spreading all over the fields and shining golden next to the watered rice paddies. The contrast between the golden wheat fields and the green, vibrant mountains is so beautiful. The plants we have as stock are also fresh and green. Although the wheat fields are already in autumn color, summer has just begun. Please be careful of heat stroke and take care of your health.
A Cafe that Makes You Feel Nostalgic
We visited a garden which we recently had a construction. It’s a Japanese “folk house” café scheduled to open by mid-June or later. The client converted their house into a café recently. The place was originally an authentic Japanese restaurant, and the architecture was unique and cool. Inside was decorated with vintage tools and folk crafts. With the structures and interiors that have remained unchanged, the folk house turned into a café that has a warm atmosphere, making us feel nostalgic.
We created a landscape using a stone wash basin and a landscaping stone that was originally placed here. The neglected garden was transformed into a lively garden, giving a new role to the stones that had been in place. The stones are already integrated deeply into the architecture, as we used materials that originally existed here. The newly brought plants and mosses are still “newcomers” to the garden, but I’m sure they will blend in with the surroundings with age.
The furnishings are also from the original store, so they already have an air of charm. I could almost hear the furniture saying, "One more job?" We can find value in new things but also in old materials that have been used for many years as they bring out a unique atmosphere.
We are aiming to create “a garden that tells a story.” Such a hundred-year-old house has its history and memories of the people who have spent time there. Our goal is to continue to weave and connect the history and thoughts of these people and architecture. We are very happy that the garden we made will be a part of the history of the café. We will continue to create a garden that tells a story.
